GENNET 2.0 holds its first international research meeting in Zaragoza, 16–17 June

On 16 and 17 June, GENNET 2.0 researchers from Cádiz, the UK, and Zaragoza met to discuss theoretical foundations, corpus design, and research methodology.

GENNET 2.0 (Genre Networks in Science Communication Online: Exploring Genre Interactions and Language Variation in Web 2.0, PID2023-148454NB-I00) investigates how scientific knowledge circulates online through interconnected webs of digital genres. More specifically, it examines how genre networks or assemblages of digital genres that work together to communicate science to diverse audiences.

The first session opened with a welcome address and an overview of the project’s objectives, followed by a presentation of Genre Network Theory (GNT, Pérez-Llantada 2025). Discussions covered the five subcorpora that structure the project:

  • High-Stakes Science Communication 
  • Professional Scientific Communication 
  • Science Communication for Research Reproducibility
  • Public Communication of Science 
  • Parascientific Communication 

The afternoon focused on methodology, mapping out a qualitative exploration and corpus-based quantitative analysis to ensure consistency across the team’s individual research designs.

The second day tackled the corpus design, collection and storage: sampling strategies, representativeness, and metadata protocols, among others. A key milestone of the project is that the corpus will be openly available under a Creative Commons licence, in line with the project’s Open Science mandates.
